(1)关于may作「可以…」之释义时,应注意

下列各点:

i)否定时,为表轻微的禁止之意,可用may not,但通常用must not:

有时用can代替may;特别是在

Can I ...? Why can't I ...?

等句型中多用can, cannot。

iii)在附加问句中,有时可用must代替may:

I mustn't do it, must [may] I?

(2)may作「大可…,尽可…」之释义时,否定型是cannot:

You may call him an expert, but you cannot call him a man of integrity.

He may not succeed.
